Delivery Systems Deliver Results

Skincare is only as good as its delivery system. You can pack a product with the latest, most innovative ingredients to fight every sign of aging, but if it doesn’t contain a good delivery system to ensure absorption and stability, then the skin will never reap the benefits.
Here are a few of the more innovative delivery systems currently being used at DermaQuest Skin Therapy:

Liposomes: One of the most common skin delivery systems, liposomes encapsulate active ingredients for enhanced penetration and a time-release effect. Liposomes are often used for a sustained release of ingredients over time. Retinol, for instance, might otherwise release too quickly and cause irritation in the skin. However, by encapsulating retinol with liposomes, we can diminish that effect and ensure a slow, steady release for sustained efficacy and less skin irritation.

PPG-12/SMDI Copolymer: Available in both an oil-soluble and water-dispersible delivery system, PPG-12/SMDI Copolymer creates a larger pathway to clear the way for active ingredients to penetrate the skin. By modifying the deposition characteristics of the key ingredients, PPG-12/SMDI Copolymer reduce the amount needed to achieve the desired effect. The delivery system not only prolongs the activity of the ingredient but, also, enhances the spreadability of the formulation to impart a soft, silky, smooth feel on the skin.

LAMINACTINE (Lysolecithin): Using patented technology, lysolecithin lends one of its fatty acids to give an ingredient’s molecule a more hydrophilic profile. The result is improved absorption of the formulation’s key ingredients. This natural delivery system also provides excellent calming and anti-irritant properties.

Perks of Pumpkin

With the cooler fall weather here, pumpkins are plentiful and a common sight on autumn-themed doorsteps and dining tables. But pumpkins aren’t just for carving; they’re also perfect for peeling − the skin that is − with gentle but effective natural proteolytic enzymes.

By now, most skin types are feeling the drying effects of the fall weather. Pumpkin helps shed dry, flaky skin while helping to maintain the natural skin barrier. Pumpkin offers a much gentler approach to exfoliation compared to chemical peels, which can burn, or microdermabrasion, which can be harsh if not administered properly and leave the skin exposed to Ultraviolet (UV) damage.

Pumpkin contains proteases or enzymes, which hydrolyze proteins to gently remove the dead cells without upsetting the skin’s pH balance.

Pumpkin also replenishes the skin with a bevy of antioxidant-rich vitamins and minerals, including beta-carotene, Vitamin A derivatives, Vitamin C, zinc, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, niacin, salicylic acid and lactic acid.

The effects are immediately visible with skin emerging softer, more luminous, elastic and clearer. The natural enzymatic action helps unclog pores, dissolve sebum and reduce hyperpigmentation. Fine lines and wrinkles recede and acne improves with the enzymes and zinc, which are naturally abundant in pumpkin.

For an extra boost, we can add glycolic, lactic or salicylic acids to enhance penetration and increase cell turnover. Or use alone for a potent home treatment. DermaQuest Pumpkin Peel uses high-grade pumpkin pulp to exfoliate and nourish skin with vitamins. Plant Stem Cells: Promise of a New Skin

As we age, our skin cells die faster than we can replicate them. Fortunately, plant stem cells present a unique advantage: the ability to not only protect or repair but to actually replace these lost or damaged cells with healthy, differentiated new cells.

The applications of plant stem cells are wide ranging, from anti-aging to anti-acne. Here, we present a few newer and lesser-known plant stem cells that are changing the face of skin care.

Common lilac (Syringa vulgaris L.) is showing new promise in fighting acne. This acid-stable antioxidant has demonstrated the ability to inhibit 5α-reductase, an enzyme involved in sebum production, while decreasing the pro-inflammatory chemokine IL-8. In a clinical study, a 1% plant stem cell extract applied twice daily for 30 days reduced acne lesions by 40% and decreased inflammation and pigmentation. Rich in verbascosides, common lilac is ideal for acneic skin with inflammatory lesions.

From the sea, several new plant stem cells have emerged to affect the way we treat skin lightening and collagen generation. Fringing France’s Brittany Coast, sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum callus culture filtrate) has the ability to regenerate itself despite the extreme temperatures and harsh conditions of its environment. In our skin, this adaptogenic benefit translates into the ability to repair pigment damage as well as heal the skin and regulate cell turnover. DermaQuest’s Stem Cell 3D Complex uses sea fennel stem cells for brightening, anti-aging and skin renewal along with Edelweiss stem cells for skin regeneration and Gardenia stem cells, which contain skin-firming and smoothing ferulic acid.

Another seashore plant native to Europe, sea holly (Eryngium maritimum) features plant stem cells that strengthen the Epidermal Dermal Junction (EDJ), thereby boosting epidermal cell activity, skin firmness, hydration and texture. In vivo tests support the cosmetic claims that include firming, revitalization, moisturization and skin texture improvement. In addition to normalizing cell differentiation and reducing photo-induced inflammation, this drought-tolerant plant’s active may also help improve collagen synthesis by 34%.
